Competent Counselors

The Competent Counselor course is a series of nineteen, biblically-based lessons intended to equip mature Christians with the means to be able to help and support others who may be struggling spiritually. Presented in a tutorial video format, the lesson’s purpose, focus and content are presented in an easy-to-follow outline. An accompanying Portable Document Format (PDF) slide deck of the lesson is provided for use as a class presentation, workshop, or for personal use.

You may not have a Christian counselor on-site, but you can have one on-call.

Delois Smith

“I deeply appreciate the opportunity to attend the Competent Counselors Class. The topics addressed are prevalent inside and outside of the church, many I have never heard addressed, and a good number are issues that most all women will eventually face over a lifetime. There are few practical avenues to receive the wise perspective of an experienced counselor and sound scriptural treatment of these issues. Delois Smith has provided an invaluable resource for future personal Bible study that will help to mature women of God to fulfill their role in mentoring others within the spiritual family. I am so grateful for her desire to provide this training, and for the many hours that she has devoted to this work. I look forward to participating in the second class that Delois has planned, and to serving my sisters as a mentor in the years to come.” Chloe

What People Are Saying

“I thought the class was so wonderful! I haven’t been able to attend the last few weeks due to illness or working late, so the slides that are emailed after each session have been SO helpful. Delois is very concise and clear with her information. Her well-thought-out topics and lessons are issues that women deal with often, so learning what to say (and what NOT to say!) is so important. I feel much more confident and prepared to help my Christian sisters because of this class. Delois has always been a fountain of knowledge so to be able to learn from her has been invaluable to me. Not only is Delois rooted in Christ, but her advice is also as well.

The lessons have been a help to me in my personal journey as a Christian. I’ve experienced some of the issues we discussed, and I feel that the class helped me heal and gain clarity on some things that have troubled me over the years. It’s so nice to know we are not alone in our struggles or judged because of them.” Lindsey

“A couple of the lessons were refreshers for me; however, I obtained a lot from the classes overall. I feel much more equipped to aid those that reach out to me. Also, I have resources to know where to refer them when the topic is beyond me.  I was able to apply some points from the lesson on abortion recently which was very helpful.” Connie

“First, I want to thank the elders for their insight as to what this course could do to help our Central ladies serve one another. I appreciate Delois’ willingness to share what God has given her – and at no expense to the Central Family. She is a jewel for always being there – either in class or if we need her all we have to do is pick up a phone. All of the lessons are applicable. There were some of the lessons where she polled anonymously, and some answered in the positive that they had either been there or are there. I feel that everyone who attended the classes feels that they received a lot from each class. Again, thank you for allowing us this opportunity.” Pat

“I have been so blessed by these classes! These have all been areas where I have struggled with myself from time to time. Seeing them from a different perspective now that there has been a great deal of healing has been immensely useful to me. It helps me make sense of my own stories and use them to help others who are or have struggled before. The postpartum depression handouts came in useful for me this week to share with my client who was asking about symptoms of and risk factors for PPD. A huge thanks to Delois for doing them, and to you for asking if I could be a part of them. I can’t begin to express how much it has helped me.” Rachel

“I was able to use the Post-Partum Depression lesson the same week we studied it. I also used the depression lesson to offer counsel to someone whose friend was depressed. It is good and necessary material.” Follin

“I gleaned a lot from Delois’; class. This class will not only be prevalent for my own personal healing, but will also help me to better serve other ladies who have experienced such issues. Yes, I do feel a lot more confident in sharing with someone who is struggling. For me it helped to know that I wasn’t alone in a lot of the issues I had to deal with.” Stacey

“The classes have been very informative. The fact that the classes are saved on slides along with the many book recommendations is very helpful. I do feel more confident in some areas and appreciate that Delois made us aware that it’s ok to know we are limited and some things are going to be ‘over our heads’. Charlotte and I have together used one lesson in its entirety with a young lady where she felt it benefited her greatly. Besides all that, I saw that there are several areas where I can improve myself and things were brought to light that I had not considered to be sin issues in my own life. The classes have equipped me to be a more supportive sister in Christ even though I believe I have a lot more to learn about the topics.” Karen

“I enjoyed the class and it has been extremely informative. I have not yet had the opportunity to necessarily utilize the lessons however, I do feel more confident/comfortable in helping or sharing with someone who may be struggling.” Rachel F.

“I really appreciated Delois’s lessons.  The topics she covered were valuable, current to issues in today’s world, well presented with many scriptural references as her foundation.  Her class went above and beyond what is taught in secular education. Since she has allowed us to download her lessons, we can go back and review what might apply to someone in need of help.  She has also allowed us to come to her with problems too difficult for us to handle.  All of that helps one feel more confident in helping a sister who is struggling. Because of the many books Delois has shared with us, I have shared a resource with someone who was interested in finding help in the scriptures on various topics. I will follow up and see if she received help from that or has anything else I can help with or any questions. I expect God will send me people He thinks I can help in the future. I have gained more insight through Delois and her wisdom and experiences.  I look forward to Unit 2 in the Fall, and the arrival of her book.” Carol

“I definitely learned a lot from the lessons and feel like some of the most helpful topics for me were the lessons on lying, sexual abuse, post-abortion syndrome, and sin entanglement. These lessons made me feel much more confident in being able to help people going through these things.” Allison

“The class was really, really helpful.  Not only was it very encouraging to hear from Delois for myself but to have the information to be able to help encourage my sisters in Christ. It covered several topics I had been seeking a godly perspective instead of an earthly one. Very grateful to Central and Delois for the opportunity!” Kat

“I appreciate the insightful lessons very much and feel that they will be useful in helping me and others minister to people and to know when to point them to someone more qualified. Thank you for the opportunity!” Suzie

“I think the lesson series is very worthwhile. I appreciate the clarity with which Delois shared her expertise, and most especially, the applicable scriptures for each counseling topic. I do feel more equipped to support a struggling sister and am grateful to have the lessons at my disposal as a resource. A few topics were completely out of my realm of experience, so the information has helped me understand certain situations much better.” Terri

“Yes, I got a lot from the lessons. Some of it I already knew or had thought about but Delois clarified and expanded on it and gave me a lot more information.  I really appreciated all the resources she shared and have already gotten a lot of them to have handy and have read some to prepare myself. Yes, I’m more confident helping someone who is struggling and have been able to share already from a couple of lessons. It would have been nice to have a little more time for questions. I know it was hard when there was so much material to cover.”Selwyn

Did you glean much from the lessons?

“Absolutely! Delois has so much knowledge and wisdom to share. She pointed out so many factors to consider in such a concise yet detailed manner.”

Do you feel more confident in helping/sharing with someone who is struggling?

“Absolutely, but I’m thankful to have her notes as well as my own to look back upon to continue to help me along the way.”

Have you been able to share with someone or have one or more of the lessons helped you?

“Not yet, but I have someone that I expect to start conversing with soon who has indirectly reached out.” Ashley

“The lessons have been very informative. I’ve learned plenty about myself and have been enlightened about things I should seek further information about. I have not been able to apply with anyone yet, but hope to. I feel a little more confidant, but I’m hoping to compile and organize the information soon so I can feel more prepared and can go over it again.” Mishaella

“It is great. I have already used entire lessons and partial lessons. And, I have also made personal changes from the info. I have reached out to the grieving, depressed, those struggling with addictions, struggling with abortion, and some who are unmotivated in their faith. I have used her lessons on all these topics. Her format is ready to follow, and supplements are helpful. Also, Delois has made herself available to personal comments and counsel. I am looking forward to using material in El Salvador and wherever the Lord takes me. Thank you elders for making this possible!” Charlotte

“The lessons are very timely and helpful indeed. I recently shared lesson #2, Depression, with a friend who told others that she was depressed. I am sure there may be other lessons that I can gain insight from and be helpful to someone else as well.” Louise
